USB Drives A Liability

3/24/2018 foxnews.com: 7 clever ways to use that USB drive again
Cloud technology has made USB drives redundant and worse, a liability since they could easily get lost.

This post is made at the risk of sounding like a 1890's buggy whip manufacturer: I do not and will never rely on the cloud to store my data or host my application software. Considering the number of U.S. data breach incidents hit a new high in 2017, I am not about to entrust my data to an infrastructure that has multiple points of potential failure and breach.

Unlike a business I am not burdened with the financial and efficiency considerations of cloud computing. Each day my backup routine includes a backup of what I consider essential data to a USB drive that hangs from my key ring. Monthly I take a system image and full data backup stored on 2 USB drives off site to a relative. I'm not naive enough to think my system is full proof. However, I do sleep better knowing the location and condition of my data and that I control its access, integrity and security.

Long live the USB drive!
