Identify government waste and fraud. Take the billions and fund alternative energy research projects in private industry and at universities.

The need for alternative energy sources is obvious. Fossil fuels are not going to last forever. Fossil fuels are screwing up our environment. Our imports of fossil fuels subsidizes unfriendly nations. The risk of a few sources monopolizing supply and disrupting prices.

Solar, Wind, Natural Gas, Biomass, Hydro Kinetic, Hydrogen, Geothermal, Nuclear, Oil, Sands/Shale, Clean Coal. All need to be developed to the point they are economically and environmentally viable, or at least proven otherwise.

America has more hydrocarbon resources than the Middle East. American technology has put a man on the moon, mapped the human genome, and successfully landed robotic exploration vehicles on Mars. It seems reasonable to believe that American scientists and engineers could also achieve a down-to-earth practical accomplishment like developing technology that would produce clean synthetic fuels from America's vast fossil fuel resources without polluting the environment.
